A celebration in Vermont (Windsor, Woodstock, Royalton, Montpelier, Burlington and more) of the Marquis de Lafayette's two day visit to Vermont, the last official stop on a 24 state visit that took more than a year. A Lafayette character actor will appear at each event planned by the towns along the original tour route.
All events free and open to all. The Lafayette actor’s visits will be part of the town events, but now, as then, Lafayette will keep to a schedule as best he can and may need to travel on to the next stop!
Windsor—7:30am
Hartland—9:00am Lafayette travelled in a carriage, or barouche, provided by David Sumner of Hartland. Sumner was a businessman who built a beautiful home where Lafayette may have stopped to pay his respects on the way from Windsor to Woodstock. The current owners of the Sumner mansion will sponsor a reception honoring the visit. Town histories mention that Hartland schoolchildren all learned about Lafayette’s visit for many years afterward.
Woodstock—10:30am In Woodstock, Vermont, there will be a Lafayette celebration on the lawn in front of the Woodstock History Center, which is located at 26 Elm Street. The event will begin around 11 am with brief historic speeches by re-enactors portraying Titus Hutchinson and the Revolutionary War hero Lafayette, followed by “toasts” for all with non-alcoholic, historic drinks, such as cider and switchel. For children and the young-at-heart, there will be a craft activity where they can decorate a cup using the same imagery and designs that were on the cup used by Lafayette when he visited Woodstock and had a drink at the local tavern, Barker’s Hotel. There will also be a small pop-up exhibit about Mary Grace Canfield, a Woodstock historian who wrote a book about Lafayette’s Vermont tour in 1934, 100 years after his death in 1834. Her thorough research has provided the basis for many of the Lafayette bicentennial activities that will be taking place this year in Vermont.
There will also be opportunities for attendees to interact and socialize with “Lafayette” and ask him questions about his life and tour through America. For those wishing to see firsthand the sites that Lafayette visited while in Woodstock, the History Center will distribute a self-guided walking tour map, replete with historic photographs. Additionally, the Woodstock History Center will have its museum open, free of charge, so that guests can view the museum’s collections, including a new exhibit that features samplers that have connections to the Revolutionary War.
East Barnard—12:45pm
Royalton—1:30pm In Royalton, Lafayette was met by 103 members of the Tunbridge Cavalry Company to escort him to town. At the current Lafayette marker on Route 14, Royalton will welcome General Lafayette; in case of inclement weather the meeting will be in the former St. Paul’s Episcopal Church building next to the marker.
Brookfield--2:15pm Lafayette passed through Brookfield, East Randolph and Randolph Center on his way to Montpelier. This part of the journey will be celebrated at Hippo Park near the floating bridge in Brookfield, located on Sunset Lake on Vermont Route 65.
Barre—3:00pm Lafayette stopped in South Barre to change horses and escort for his evening in nearby Montpelier at a tavern owned by Major Ira Day who also co-owned the turnpike to Williamstown that Lafayette travelled on. The exact location of the tavern is in question, but the Barre History Center and Library will receive and welcome General Lafayette at the historic Spaulding school building at 60 Washington Street (Rt 302) in Barre, The public is invited to visit and view the new research and exhibition gallery which contains hundreds of items, including mementos from Lafayette’s 1825 visit!
Montpelier—4:00pm Montpelier will welcome General Lafayette in front of the Vermont Supreme Court, which was the site of the first statehouse (1808). The welcome will include re-enactments of the speeches given in 1825 and a brief history by curator David Schutz of the first statehouse, where Lafayette spoke from the balcony of the old wooden building. Invitees include Governor Scott and US Senator Peter Welch to address Lafayette. The welcome will be followed by a reception next door at the Vermont History Museum, featuring a talk by historian Alan Hoffman, who translated the original detailed account of the farewell tour from French to English that was published by Lafayette’s secretary August Levasseur. Lafayette will then receive a private tour of the current statehouse, which will be open along with the museum during the day for public enjoyment.
All events free with exception of the Lake Champlain Dinner Cruise.
Montpelier—8:30am Due to the late hour of Lafayette’s arrival the night before, a meeting with the ladies of Montpelier was postponed until the next morning. It might have not happened but for the persistence of Sarah Isham Watrous, who may have been one of only two women to have formally addressed Lafayette on the entire tour. Their moving words will be re-enacted at the Bethany Church on Main Street, site of the original meeting. Although the old brick church from 1820 is gone, the current church retains a Paul Revere bell also dating from 1825. The public is invited to the morning meeting, but now as then the women only will be offering their welcome to General Lafayette before he leaves for his next stop on the way to Burlington. This meeting was the beginning of the last day of the official visit which had begun in June of 1824!
Waterbury—9:45am
Williston—10:15am On June 29th at 10:15am, the Williston Historical Society is excited to host Julien Icher of the Lafayette Trail, Inc. (a leading expert on the topic) and a General Lafayette actor (of Lafayette 200 in Vermont) to celebrate the unveiling of the Lafayette trail marker on the Williston Village Green (7773 Williston Rd, Williston, VT 05495) in honor of Lafayette's reception in Williston on the same day in 1825. The event will last approximately 30 minutes and include remarks from the various stakeholders involved in the preparation of this historic occasion.
In conformity with the spirit of republican education championed by Lafayette in his time to promote a greater understanding by Americans of the ideals of freedom and democratic equality upon which their nation was founded, the event will be FREE OF CHARGE AND OPEN TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC.
We find comfort in knowing that once installed and dedicated, this monument will tell the story of Lafayette's connection to Williston and Vermont and educate younger Americans about its meaning, thereby fulfilling Lafayette's political goal of institutionalizing freedom across generations in the United States.
Essex Junction—11:00am Although Lafayette did not stop in Essex in 1825, he will stop by for a re-enactment and wreath-laying in the village cemetery for David Day II. Sergeant Day had served with Lafayette in the pivotal Yorktown campaign of 1781 which sealed the American victory. Join us graveside for the emotional story of their reunion in Burlington, where Day presented the sword given to him by Lafayette almost fifty years earlier. Participating in honoring Essex’s revolutionary war soldiers will be the Burlington Chapter of the DAR and staff from the Josiah Day House in West Springfield, Massachusetts, the town where David Day enlisted from in 1780 at age 22.
Winooski—11:45am French Heritage Day
Winooski Farmers Market (20 Winooski Falls Way, Winooski, VT 05404)
Sunday, June 29th, 10am-2pm
Now in its 20th year, French Heritage Day celebrates Vermont’s rich French history and heritage, as well as Québecois culture. The celebration features: live French music, guest market vendors with French-inspired goods, a French Bread and Pouding Chomeur baking contest, kids and professional Waiter Races, a visit from Revolutionary War General Marquis de Lafayette, Plein Air painting, Petanque lawn games, local history and genealogy resources, and French language speaking, all in addition to a full farmers market. The Winooski History museum will be open in the Champlain Mill.
Burlington—2:00pm After meeting with old soldiers and the public downtown at city hall park, Lafayette travelled up to UVM to lay the cornerstone for the new Old Mill building, which was destroyed by fire a year earlier. He was met by students and the new UVM president, Willard Preston. Lafayette had lain the cornerstone for the massive Bunker Hill Monument in Boston just a week earlier. He, and many Burlington dignitaries, were members of the Masonic Fraternity. One of the well-known public ceremonies that Freemasons perform is the consecration of a cornerstone as it is being laid during the construction of a new building. The Grand Lodge of Vermont will be performing this ceremony to commemorate Lafayette's doing this 200 years ago, at what is now the historic Old Mill building on the UVM campus at 26 University Place. The public is welcome to attend!
Burlington waterfront—6:00—9:00pm Join us for a dinner cruise on Lake Champlain to celebrate the last official event of Lafyette’s 1824/5 farewell tour of America. At around midnight on June 29, 1825, Lafayette departed Burlington on the steamship Phoenix, accompanied by the steamer Congress and a number of small boats as headed to Whitehall New York. Our cruise on the Spirit of Ethan Allen will be lots of fun come rain or shine!
Tickets for the cruise with Lafayette must be purchased directly from the Spirit of Ethan Allen for $64 or $69(window seating). Go to SOEA.com, click on Sounds of Summer Dinner Cruise and choose your seating option. The cruise departs at 6:30pm but we are requested to gather as a group at 6:00pm near the ECHO museum on the waterfront.
